Most flamenco students already have plenty of material. The question is: Do you know how to use it freely?
In this special two-hour workshop, Reyes Barrios will not teach a new dance or choreography. Instead, she will help you understand how to work creatively and confidently with the material you have already learned.
You will explore how to:
• “Cut and paste” your existing material
• Use escobillas and remates in different places and different bailes
• Recognize and respond naturally to the cante—even if you do not speak Spanish
• Make your dancing feel more organic and less mechanical
• Adapt your material for both group dances and solos
• Recover from mistakes and make adjustments in the moment
• Dance with greater musicality, confidence, and freedom
COMPÁS, PALMAS & SONIQUETE
A major focus of this workshop will be compás, compás, compás!
Through extensive work with palmas and soniquete - the essential groove and rhythmic feeling of flamenco - you will develop a deeper understanding of how the different parts of flamenco work together.
Reyes will work with palmas for cante, baile, and guitar, including how to accompany your own baile with palmas while practicing an escobilla. You will also become more familiar with different letras associated with the palos you are currently studying, helping you respond to the cante with greater ease.
WHO MAY ATTEND?
Beginners are welcome! Watching, listening, and asking questions are essential ways of learning flamenco. Beginner students are encouraged to participate at their own level and absorb as much as possible.
Intermediate and advanced participants should currently be studying with a flamenco dance teacher and should come prepared to work with material they have already learned.
This workshop is ideal for students who want to move beyond simply memorizing choreography and begin understanding how to truly dance flamenco.
